Gwar - Phallus in wonderland

Synopsis : Violence has arrived…
This is Gwar’s latest album’s title. Gwar is more than a music band. It is also a theatre band playing the big epic of horrible Neolithic characters. Gwar have released many videos of this epic about horror, violence and sex. They compose songs, draw cartoon characters and make films to adapt the stories they write. This article is about Phallus in wonderland, a film they originally released in 1992. It contains six songs from the album “America must be destroyed”. This was their first movie-like video, but they had done several video works before. Movie review: You
could call this a musical, even though the music is more brutal than musical.
This is the first singularity of the movie: the songs are not romantic
and cheesy as in most musicals. This is a hard rock musical.
The film does actually fit in many other categories: horror, comedy, thriller, adventure, maybe cartoon and others. In fact, it alternates permanently between these styles: You start out in a mysterious atmosphere, a dark place, a cave (mystic, adventure). Then strange and horrible characters come up (horror). They start talking. Their modern slang does not really fit in the atmosphere of the cave they are in (comedy). Suddenly, the ugly monster holding a stone (to throw at his opponent) looses it. The stone falls on his foot, it hurts and he jumps in a hilarious way, just like in a dumb comedy or a cartoon (comedy, humour, cartoon). Sometimes the switching might be a bit abrupt. But again, this is how it goes in musicals: people start singing and if that seemed more or less natural, it is usually not the case when they stop singing and start acting normal again. So we can consider this film does not break the rules. It is wanted. There are really many hilarious happenings in this film,
as well as pretty good creations. The costumes mainly hold my attention.
They are numerous and very complete with details. They obviously hold
an important place in Gwar’s art (at least as much as music in
my opinion). “Classical” styles and people often inspire
their music and art, usually quite in an ironic way but not in a degrading
one. There is so much derision and vulgarity but also aesthetic,
cultural references and precision in their work that it can be considered
an end in itself. And they are very good at that work. As said before, the costumes are very well crafted,
they created a whole world of themselves with many heroes with powers
and diverse attributes. Behind the funny face of the artwork is an underlying
thread about liberty of speech and censorship. In the film, the government,
the clergy and the health care communities have censored Gwar. The “morality
squad” has kidnapped one of the members of the band, the cuttlefish
of cthulu, and they put him on trial for obscenity. From the start, before they encountered problems, Gwar
fought against censorship. They created a world of violence, sex, and
horror. There is more to say about Gwar. But as a conclusion I’ll say that Gwar not only provokes to deliver their political message, they make it in an artistic and aesthetic way. Both are worth watching the film. |
