The line between fantasy and reality became ever more blurred last week with the alarming media reports that the rat population in the UK is on the rise (up by 15 per cent in the last year), with many commentators in the rat-catching business suggesting we are about to witness the evolution of the super-rat – one that is resistant to traditional poisons.
Meanwhile, in Manhattan, a previously unknown rat-borne virus is spreading throughout the human population so quickly the emergency services are struggling to contain it. As day turns to night, the victims of this new plague mutate into flesh-hungry half human-half rodent creatures forcing the authorities to quarantine the island of Manhattan by sealing off all bridges and tunnels.
Okay, only one of those previous two paragraphs – the first one – is true.
The second is taken from the synopsis of ZOMBIE VIRUS ON MULBERRY STREET, a brand new horror film coming to DVD this Monday. But, combine recent health scares such as the swine flu virus outbreak with the steady rise in numbers of disease-spreading vermin in our towns and cities and one question arises: How long will it be before life begins to reflect art in a way we dare not imagine? Scary, isn’t it?
Released in the UK by Momentum Pictures.
